B) Location
The hamlet of Black Horse Corners is known to have been situated around the four corners of what is now Regional Roads 50 and 97 in North Dumfries Township, Regional Municipality of Waterloo (see Figures 1—4). This includes, for the most part, Lots 36 and 37, Concession 11 and Lots 36 and 37 Concession 10 of North Dumfries Township
Physiographically, the site is sitated at the base of a long hill sloping upward to the west. Eden Creek, now only a muddied and stagnant ditch-like body, extends to both sides of Regional Road 50 and south of Regional Road 97, and runs through what was probably the centre of Black Horse Corners (see Figure 4) The soils of the site are of a clay loam type.
This study is predominately concerned with lands lying within the 20 m wide permanent easement and the adjacent 12 m wide temporary easement running through Lots 36 and 37, Concession 11. Areas beyond 60 m to either side of Regional Road 50 (ie. the edge of the temporary easement) were not extensively probed since, in testing, they yielded no cultural information.
